The Generic Applications team around Marcel Brunner, responsible for security and workplace solutions, has developed, together with baseVISION, a roadmap to continually improve security to mitigate risks and support the business through a stable and resilient infrastructure. The Security Improvement Project is the start of the journey and aims to set minimum standards, improve knowledge and establish processes for the future.
The roadmap has provided a structured, but still agile way to work toward our goal to provide freedom and security to our users.

The Transformation
When trying to increase a company’s security level, it’s crucial to start with the basic workplace and server configuration to reduce vulnerabilities in the configuration and the application landscape. The Microsoft Security Baselines are a good starting point and with the addition of threat and vulnarability management, which is built into Microsoft Defender for Endpoint, these can also be operationalized for the long term.
The Microsoft Defender and Azure Defender solutions help protect the whole attack kill chain on multiple levels. Even during the course of project, numerous minor attacks could be observed and responded to accordingly. One of the most positive effects is how the products within the new Microsoft Security Center provide a holistic view and work together to protect the whole environment. Additionally, the different layers ensure the environment remains secure if an attack manages to get past one detection system.
A fast and correct response to incidents and alerts is essential. To improve companies’ operational processes, Azure Logic Apps helps transfer information to the internal service management tool, allowing the use of existing escalation processes and enabling engineers to work with existing interfaces. Hand-over workshops support the security team through knowledge transfer and the creation of operational manuals written for specific use cases.
The shift from traditional multi-vendor solutions towards a simplified and highly integrated security architecture that can support the on-premises and cloud environment based on Microsoft 365 E5 Security and Azure Defender also brings cost benefits. Compared to licensing single components, the Microsoft suite simplified and optimized costs for Sigvaris. Due to the roadmap provided by baseVISION, Sigvaris was even able to enjoy cost savings by initially licensing single components until the break-even point was reached.
